Because now we have a professional army, which I think is a real danger to
democratic institutions. For sure, some of those professionals stood in Trump's way on Jan 6 and before that; guys like Mattis and Kelley. But I'm talking about rank and file soldiers. They are all volunteers and sent off to fight useless wars like Iraq and Afghanistan, as if our presence there is to use violence to restructure those societies. Further, they come home to a world that alien and pretty insular. WWII vets had a hard adjustment period. Vietnam vets too for a different reason. But a lot of them were draftees. I think they are less likely to be radicalized.
